E. David Crawford, M.D. - Chairman

Chairman of the PCEC since 1989. Dr. Crawford is professor of surgery, professor of radiation oncology, and head of the Section of Urologic Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver. A nationally recognized expert in prostate cancer, Dr. Crawford is the recipient of more than 69 research grants for the study of the following topics: treatment of advanced bladder cancer; metastatic adenocarcinoma of the prostate; hormone-refractory prostate cancer; and several areas of urologic infections and malignancies. He has authored or coauthored over 300 articles published in such journals as Urology, The New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Crawford is also an editorial reviewer or consultant for a large number of publications, including Urology, Journal of Urology, The New England Journal of Medicine, Cancer and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Crawford is also an active member of many national and international organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Urological Association (AUA), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Within the AUA, he is a member of the Committee to Study Urologic Research Funding and the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Subcommittee. Dr. Crawford also currently serves on the board of the Southwest Oncology Group. Dr. Crawford's involvement in the national prostate cancer arena is highly recognized. He has received several honors and awards, including, as co-investigator, the 1999 CaP Cure Annual Award for Scientific Presentation. In 1997, he was presented with a "Freddie Award" at the AMA International Health and Medical Film Competition for the program, ITV: The Cutting Edge Medical Report (Prostate Cancer: Understanding, Diagnosing, and Defeating), which Dr. Crawford hosted with special guest, retired General Norman Schwarzkopf.

Colonel David G. McLeod, M.D., J.D.

Colonel David G. McLeod, M.D., is Chief of Urologic Oncology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC and Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD. Doctor McLeod is also Director of the Urology Residency Program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery (Urology) at Georgetown University Medical Center. Doctor McLeod is a Colonel in the United States Army Medical Corps. A member of the Medical Department since 1964, Doctor McLeod has received numerous military commendations, including the Legion of Merit award with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and the Combat Medical Badge for service in Vietnam. Doctor McLeod served as Clearing Platoon Leader and Medical Company Commander of the 1st Brigade 101st Airborne Division while in Vietnam. An alumnus of the University of North Carolina’s undergraduate and medical schools, Doctor McLeod also holds a J.D. from Northern Virginia Law School. He is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Society of Clinical Urology, the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. In addition, Doctor McLeod is the President of the American Foundation of Urologic Disease whose mission is the prevention and cure of urologic disease, through the expansion of patient education, public awareness, research and advocacy, and Immediate Past President of the Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Urologic Association. A principal investigator in numerous collaborative studies, Doctor McLeod’s work has appeared in several major medical journals, including Urology, the Journal of Urology, the Journal of Urologic Oncology, and Cancer. He has also co-authored multiple chapters and publications on Urologic Oncology.

John Lynch, M.D.

Dr. John Lynch is a professor in the Department of Surgery at Georgetown University. He is also the Interim Chair in the Division of Urology. He earned his medical degree in 1973 from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1974. He spent his residency at Emory University and at Georgetown University Medical Center. His special interests include Urologic Oncology, Urinary diversion, Nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy and Treatment of benign prostatic enlargement. He is also doing research on high intensity focused ultrasound.

Michael Brawer, M.D.

Dr. Michael Brawer received his medical degree form the University of California School of Medicine, and completed his internship and residency at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the Editor of two journals: Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases and Reviews In Urology; and he is on the editorial review boards of 12 other journals. Dr. Brawer has been the principal investigator or consultant for approximately 81 studies supported through national research and industry grants.

Frank E. Staggers, M.D.

Past President of the California Medical Association is board certified in Urology since 1963 and practices in Oakland, CA. He served as Chief of Urology, Alameda County Medical Center from 1989-2001. Dr. Staggers has been a leader and active member in his many professional organizations as well as well as community based organizations both at the local, state and national levels. He has served as president of the National Medical Association (NMA) and also as president of the California State Chapter. The NMA is the nation's oldest and largest professional, educational, and scientific organization representing the interests of more than 25,000 African American physicians. He has served at Chair of the Advisory Committee on Minority Physicians for the American Medical Association and as Consultant to the Minority Consortium. Dr. Staggers served as Vice Chair, Chair, and President of the California Medical Association(CMA); an organization of more that 34,000 members. He has held many positions in his local county medical society, including the presidency. Dr. Staggers is a co-founder and Chairs the Ethnic Health Institute(EHI); a community service of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center located in Oakland and Berkeley, California. The Ethnic Health Institute's mission is to promote the health and well being of the community, with a focus on underserved and minority populations.

Nelson N. Stone, M.D.

Nelson Neal Stone, M.D. is an Attending Physician in the Departments of Urology and Radiation Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Stone is also a Clinical Professor of Urology and Radiation Oncology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and at the Derald H. Ruttenberg Cancer Center at Mount Sinai. He also serves as Medical Director for ProLogics LLC in Nashville, TN.

Dr. Stone earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland in 1979. He completed a general surgical residency in 1981 at the University of Maryland, followed by residencies in urology at the University of Maryland. Dr. Stone then completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a research fellowship in biochemical endocrinology at Rockefeller University in 1986.

Dr. Stone has founded several medical companies and serves on the editorial board many scientific journals.

Dr. Stone is a member of many professional societies, including the Prostate Cancer Education Council, the Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy, the New York State Urological Society, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and the American Urologic Association.

Dr. Stone has participate in approximately 25 research studies on prostate cancer and has authored over 300 articles, abstracts and book chapters, most on prostate cancer. He invented the real-time technique for prostate seed implantation and is currently training urologists and radiation oncologists in Japan on his method.

Wendy L. Poage, M.H.A.

Wendy Poage earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the Colorado State University in 1993 and her Masters of Health Care Administration at Webster University in 1997. Wendy has been the Executive Director of the Prostate Cancer Education Council since 1998. She serves on several committees including Advanced Prostate Cancer Task Force and the Prostate Cancer Advocacy Group. Ms. Poage has vast experience in prostate cancer and urology including leadership positions in a number of renowned educational institutions, hospitals, non-profits and private practices settings. Additionally, she has managed and directed several large NIH and DOD research grants.

Mark A. Moyad, MD, MPH

Dr. Moyad received his masters degree in public health from the University of South Florida where he was one of the lead investigators of the L-tryptophan dietary supplement study that helped to remove this dangerous supplement from the market. He published his first medical article in college on the relationship between a compound found in cottonseed oil and male infertility. He received his M.D. from Wayne State University school of Medicine. He is currently working part-time on his Ph.D. in pathology and N.D. (Naturopathic doctor) degree. He is the author or co-author of 4 books and has 3 additional books coming out in the next 12 months including a guide for Men’s and Women’s Health and a Breast Cancer Prevention Book. He is the primary author of over 60 medical articles. He is the editor of the complementary/ preventive medicine medical book series from Humana press. Dr. Moyad has also been the guest editor of 5 different medical journals. He reviews or edits articles for a number of medical journals including: Urology, Journal of Urology, Cancer, Nutrition and Cancer, British Journal of Urology… He is the director of the Complementary/Preventive medicine course for the Annual American Urologic Association Meeting and the Annual Urologic Nurses Meeting. Dr. Moyad has an endowed chair/directorship at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Complementary and Preventive Medicine. He has had a consulting practice for almost 10 years and he runs clinical trials and basic science studies in regards to complementary/preventive at the University. He has lectured in all 50 states to health professionals and patients and he speaks internationally and gives courses in Europe and Asia on a regular basis. His latest research includes identifying the relationship between lipid changes and cancer risk and treatment. He will also be the co-director of the new Men’s Health program at the University of Michigan in 2004.

Daniel P. Petrylak, MD

Daniel P. Petrylak, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and director of the Genitourinary Oncology Program at Columbia Presbyterian Center of New York – Presbyterian Hospital . Dr. Petrylak graduated from Columbia College in New York and earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University of Medicine in Cleveland , Ohio . He served his internship and residency in internal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and went on to complete a fellowship in medical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center , also both in New York . A diplomate of internal medicine and medical oncology, Dr. Petrylak has received several grants and funding support from the National Institutes of Health, private foundations such as CaP CURE and the pharmaceutical industry to study cancer treatments. Since 1995, Dr. Petrylak has been a chairman of the Advanced Bladder Subcommittee of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), a network of institutions and investigators working to improve the survival of cancer patients through clinical research. Dr. Petrylak instructs medical students on the formal principles of cancer chemotherapy as part of the Abnormal Human Biology course at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles and abstracts appearing in such peer-reviewed journals as Cancer, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Nature, Journal of Urology New England Journal of Medicine, and Journal of Clinical Oncology. In addition, Dr. Petrylak has presented his research at numerous medical conferences, had a plenary sessions at ASCO and the AUA this year. He has authored several book chapters, reviews and editorials about the treatment of cancers of the prostate, bladder and kidney. Dr. Petrylak is a member of several medical societies, including the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the American Urological Association. He also served as a member of the Devices and Immunologicals Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
